Leica Summilux 35mm f/1.4 ASHP FLE lens
Leica has produced many legendary optics over the decades, but the 35mm Summilux FLE remains one of the most complete and balanced lenses ever created for the M platform. After spending considerable time with it, I can confidently say that this lens captures everything that makes the Leica system special - rendering, precision, dimensionality, and the emotional connection between photographer and scene.
I originally purchased the 35mm FLE to replace my 28mm Summicron. The 28mm was technically excellent and exceptionally sharp, but the rendering characteristics were different. The Summilux line carries a distinct signature that is difficult to quantify through specifications alone. Colors feel richer, transitions feel smoother, and images carry a certain depth that gives photographs a more immersive and cinematic quality.
Specifications and laboratory testing can be found almost anywhere online. What matters in real-world use is how a lens behaves when you walk through a city for hours with a camera in hand. This is where the 35mm FLE excels.
The lens is remarkably versatile. It is wide enough for environmental storytelling, architecture, and urban scenes, yet controlled enough for portraits and subject isolation. It sits perfectly between the immersive feel of a wide-angle lens and the intimacy of a standard focal length.
For my own shooting style, the 35mm pairs exceptionally well with a 50mm lens. The combination creates a natural two-lens setup for street photography and travel work. I still personally prefer the framing discipline of a 50mm most of the time, but the 35mm becomes invaluable whenever space is limited or when I want to include more context within the frame.
This is one of the major advantages the 35mm focal length has over 28mm on a rangefinder body. While 28mm can be fantastic, it often pushes the limits of the standard Leica viewfinder experience. The 35mm frame lines feel more natural and more integrated into the classic M shooting process. Composing becomes faster, cleaner, and more intuitive.
Another strength of the FLE is usability. Despite being a fast f/1.4 lens, it remains surprisingly manageable for long shooting days. The balance on the camera is excellent, and the focusing experience feels precise and confidence inspiring even when shooting wide open.
Recently, I traveled to Boston, Massachusetts for the first time. I knew before arriving that carrying only a 50mm would likely feel restrictive in a dense urban environment, especially while exploring unfamiliar streets. The 35mm FLE proved to be the perfect choice.
I spent an entire day walking, climbing, running through crowded areas, and photographing the city from morning until evening. The focal length adapted effortlessly to changing situations - narrow streets, architecture, waterfront scenes, and spontaneous moments in motion.
Boston also reinforced why 35mm remains one of the strongest focal lengths for city photography. It provides enough width to capture atmosphere without introducing the exaggerated perspective distortion common with ultra-wide lenses. Subjects remain natural, buildings retain their proportions, and compositions feel immersive without becoming chaotic.
During that trip I used the lens on a Leica M body together with a 3-stop neutral density filter in order to shoot wide open in daylight conditions. The filter itself was a premium B+W model with excellent optical quality, although additional vignetting was still noticeable in certain situations. Depending on the scene, the effect could either enhance the mood or become slightly distracting.
Ultimately, the Leica 35mm Summilux-M FLE ASPH is not simply a technical tool. It is a lens designed around experience. It encourages movement, exploration, and intuitive photography. It disappears in your hands and allows you to focus entirely on observation and timing.
For photographers who appreciate the Leica M philosophy, the 35mm FLE represents one of the purest expressions of the system.
